Buying guide · Walnuts direct from a grower

Walnuts from a grower: what to ask first.

A few straightforward questions can tell you what you are buying and who grew it.

The short answer

Direct contact with a grower gives you a clearer view of origin, harvest availability and how the walnuts were collected, dried and sorted. A photograph or a broad product claim is not enough on its own.

What does ‘direct from a grower’ mean?

It means that a specific farm and the people who care for it stand behind the product. It does not necessarily mean an online shop. Availability and collection or delivery can be discussed directly by phone or message.

The useful difference is traceable information: where the orchards are, whether the walnuts are the grower’s own crop, what is currently available and how the crop was handled after harvest.

Five useful questions

A short conversation can distinguish clear information from a vague listing.

Origin

Where are the trees and who grows the walnuts?

Harvest

Which season are the walnuts from and how are they stored?

Harvesting and drying

How is moisture removed promptly after collection?

Sorting

How are halves, quarters and smaller pieces separated?

Availability

Which products and quantities are available now?

Appearance is only part of the picture

Colour, consistency and the proportion of whole halves are visible characteristics, but they do not describe the entire product. Clean aroma, pleasant flavour, texture and correct storage matter as well.

Check what the pack contains and read its batch, best-before, allergen and storage information.

The OnlyNuts orchards

Our orchards are in Lykoudi, Elassona, at 500 metres on the western foothills of Mount Olympus. The first 50 trees were planted in 1992; today we grow more than 700 trees across more than five hectares.

We are in the orchards throughout the year. Harvesting and drying are mechanised, cracking is handled by certified partners, and we complete the final kernel sorting ourselves by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy from a grower without an online shop?

Yes. Availability, quantity and collection or delivery can be agreed directly, with the appropriate sales document issued by the producer.

What should a pack tell me?

Look for the product name, responsible business, net weight, batch, best-before date, storage instructions and allergen information.

Is availability the same all year?

Not necessarily. Total volume and the proportion of each grade depend on the harvest and can change during the year.
